WORKING CONDITIONS & WAGES

Production takes place exclusively in Bali, Indonesia. Working with small family-run businesses enables handcrafted, artisanal jewellery and supports local income sources.

Lieves Jewels collaborates only with a few long-term partners, visits the workshops in person, and maintains regular communication to help ensure fairer conditions. According to the brand, there is near-daily exchange on production, quality control, and material sourcing.

The Balinese production partner has implemented a structured monthly CSR programme since 2022. This includes environmental initiatives, support for local communities, cultural preservation, as well as education and health programmes. According to the report, employees receive wages above the regional minimum wage in Gianyar. All staff are also covered by the Indonesian national social security system for health and employment.

Production is done by hand in small quantities, avoiding overproduction and reinforcing the artisanal character.

Although there are no formal certifications, the Balinese partner supports social programmes for women and a children’s foundation in Sidemen.
The brand also works with local models, photographers, and make-up artists, thereby involving the Balinese community.

MATERIALS

• Lab-grown white zircon

Freshwater and baroque pearls are cultivated in water. The founder notes that a healthy aquatic environment is essential for the quality of these pearls and that this is ensured for their pearl sources, though no external verification is available.

For the lab-grown zircon, clear traceability is lacking. The supplier highlights local production in France and a responsible use of resources. The raw stones are partly produced by a French company whose methods reportedly leave almost no environmental footprint. The company also emphasises selected materials, more environmentally friendly production processes, and the use of renewable energy. However, concrete details on the origin of all raw materials, certified standards, or full supply-chain transparency are not provided.

PACKAGING

The brand uses paper-based packaging produced by a small family business in southern Italy.

WATER USAGE & CHEMICALS

At present, Lieves Jewels has not conducted formal measurements regarding water consumption, chemical management, or the safe handling of polishing and cleaning agents.

CIRCULAR PRODUCT DESIGN 

The individual components of the jewellery can generally be separated easily and are therefore potentially recyclable.

Repairs are carried out in Milan or Utrecht and not sent back to Bali, avoiding unnecessary transport. Owing to the clear construction of the pieces, they are generally easy to repair, for example by replacing clasps or similar parts.

Silver remnants from casting, polishing, and cutting are collected and reprocessed, keeping materials in circulation for longer and reducing the need for new silver.

CIRCULAR BUSINESS MODELL

Lieves Jewels offers a repair service.

There is no take-back service for worn or damaged jewellery.

Production is intentionally carried out in very small quantities. Designs without ongoing demand remain available as pre-order items to avoid overproduction.

• The brand sends a shipment from Bali to Europe roughly every three months, usually via DHL.

Lieves Jewels does not communicate a formal code of conduct for animal-derived materials. However, the label consciously rejects diamonds and other environmentally harmful gemstone sources, working exclusively with pearls as a renewable animal-based material.

PRODUCT DESIGN

Lieves Jewels offers minimalist jewellery, including earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and rings. The collection is timeless and elegant.

The brand provides care instructions that support the longevity of the jewellery.

SLOW FASHION PROCESS

Lieves Jewels operates with a small core collection. A large part of production is made to order, resulting in small batches and avoiding overproduction. 

Individual designs can be customised for customers.

PRODUCT TRANSPRENCY 

Customers can see the materials used on each product page, along with precise measurements and weights. It is also clearly stated that the designs are created in Italy and handcrafted in Bali. This provides basic traceability, as customers can identify where their piece was made; however, concrete details such as the origin of all materials are not provided.

PROCESS TRANSPARENCY

Specific information about individual suppliers, their internal structures, or detailed production processes is not published. Transparency is therefore limited to general descriptions of origin and artisanal production, meaning full traceability of products and materials is not available to customers.

However, the brand did provide COSH! with additional information about its Balinese production partner. Since 2022, the partner has conducted a structured monthly CSR programme that includes environmental initiatives, community support, cultural preservation, and education and health programmes. The regularly documented activities offer further insight into the partner’s social context and increase the level of social transparency within the supply chain.
