WORKING CONDITIONS & LIVING WAGES
Every jumper, sweatshirt, dress and T‑shirt is handcrafted in Janne Landuyt’s studio in Belgium. The designer is happy to welcome you, by appointment, to the colourful atelier on the Lutgart site, the creative breeding ground in a former school in Beringen.
Moreover, the brand is registered with Ik Koop Belgisch, indicating that the creative process takes place in Belgium.
Most of the yarns are produced by an Italian yarn manufacturer in Prato, Tuscany. The Belgian knitwear brand deliberately chooses a large-scale, European manufacturer that is renowned for their quality.
MATERIALS
- Merino wool
- Cashmere
- Cotton
- Linen
- Viscose
- Mohair
- Alpaca
- Polyamide
Janne Landuyt’s cosy and unique jumpers are mainly made of merino wool and cashmere. In the summer collection, this is combined with cotton, linen and viscose. Other materials used in the collections are mohair, alpaca and sometimes polyamide.
A few designs require the addition of the synthetic polyamide to ensure that the clothes keep their shape well, and enjoy a longer lifespan.
PACKAGING
Janne Landuyt packs each creation in a reusable cotton bag. This way, your purchase enjoys protection from sunlight and moths. For shipments, the brand chooses PEFC-certified cardboard, so no plastic is involved.
WATER USAGE & CHEMICALS
The yarn manufacturer has the OEKO-Tex Standard 100 certificate. This shows that the yarns contain no harmful chemicals after dyeing.
CIRCULAR PRODUCT DESIGN
Janne Landuyt designs often consist of material blends. However, the brand consciously chooses to use as many natural materials as possible, for example, the blend of merino wool and cotton is easier to recycle than when a natural fibre is mixed with a synthetic one.
CIRCULAR BUSINESS MODELS
To make sure you don’t have to scrap your purchase in case of a defect, you can have your item repaired by the brand. Within a month of purchase, this is free; if you have been wearing your garment for longer, you can have it repaired for a fee.
DISTANCE & COMPLEXITY OF THE SUPPLY CHAIN
Production locations:
- Belgium
Janne designs and knits the collections in her studio in Beringen. She even works with second-hand knitting machines for this purpose.
The yarns are spun in Tuscany, Italy.
This makes for a relatively short supply chain. The only aspect of the chain that causes further distances is the origin of the wool. There are indications that the Italian yarn producer is sourcing its raw materials in Asia.
TRANSPORTATION
As each item is knitted in the atelier itself, no transport is needed at this stage. Moreover, when you make a purchase, you can choose to pick up your order yourself to get a behind-the-scenes look.
- Merino wool
- Cashmere
- Mohair
- Alpaca wool
The most commonly used material in the collection is merino wool.
Janne Landuyt chooses wool that is RWS and/or RMS certified (Responsible Wool Standard & Responsible Mohair Standard). These certificates check the living conditions of the animals to prevent animal cruelty and unethical practices.
PRODUCT DESIGN
Although the jumpers, shirts and dresses are released by seasons, many items are still suitable for year-round wear. Each collection features atypical, original colour combinations that are just typical of Janne’s style. She makes knitwear for men, women and also has several gender-neutral designs.
SLOW FASHION PROCESSES
Because each garment is handmade, the brand produces in small collections with limited batch sizes. Janne releases a collection twice a year.
Besides her own collections, Janne also likes to make custom-made designs. Here, you choose the colour, size and design of a jumper yourself. Janne knits the clothes to suit your needs, figure and personality.
Even for creative unique pieces, the brand is open to exploring together what is possible. Your knit is not just another garment, but a wearable piece of art that fits you completely. This is how this Belgian brand aims to combine self-expression and comfort with Belgian handmade excellence!
Would you rather get creative yourself? Janne Landuyt also offers knitting workshops. Brush up on your techniques and give your ideas free rein. You can learn to knit a self-designed scarf or take more technical workshops.
TRANSPARENCY ON PRODUCT
