Iriedaily has been a part of the Fair Wear Foundation since 2016. Just one year later, they were awarded Leader status, meaning the brand had taken further steps in practising fair trade and that their collection was produced fairly and humanely. Iriedaily doesn’t just rely on the Fair Wear Foundation’s independent audits and regularly visits its manufacturers. One of its suppliers was also GOTS and BSCI audited. They even filmed their Portuguese factory visits in 2021 so you can have a look behind the scenes.
Iriedaily has been with manufacturers based in Portugal and China for over ten years.
About 55% of their products (jackets, shirts, trousers and accessories) are produced in China. They have a complaints system for factory workers in place and are in constant communication with their suppliers. The complaints are also published in their sustainability report. Their largest suppliers are GOTS certified and the brand is now working on certification for its products. Iriedaily creates CSR workshops for its employees and implements trainings in Portugal and China held by the brand’s own specialist.
Although Iriedaily is not yet a perfectly sustainable brand, it is well aware of this and is taking steps in the right direction. Every year, Iriedaily looks for more sustainable ways to produce their clothing. In 2022, 86% of its collection was made from sustainable materials. These include organic cotton, recycled polyester and nylon, hemp, Lenzing Ecovero Viscose and Tencel. They also increasingly use sustainable materials, such as cork and leather alternatives, such as apple skin, for their accessories.
These materials are also certified as most of the manufacturers Iriedaily works with have obtained the GOTS label. This label guarantees that no harmful chemicals have been used throughout the process and that organic cotton has been used. It also verifies the working conditions of the manufacturer. The brand is currently working on attaining GOTS certification for its products. Their store shopping bags are made completely biodegradable and their have adopted recycled polybags for shipment of their products within their supply chain.
Iriedaily is making efforts to close the loop. They use recycled polyester from PET bottles and ocean plastic. They also make polyester from old clothes or pre-consumer textile waste. Their recycled nylon is produced from processing waste, ensuring that raw materials such as oil remain in the cycle.
However, wearing and washing synthetic clothing from recycled polyester or nylon releases microplastics into the environment. The shedding of microplastics increases with recycled fabrics because the textile fibres are shorter. Iriedaily tries to mitigate this by selling special laundry bags for its polyester fibre clothing. They also organise clean-up campaigns to clear beaches of plastic. They sell the guppy bag to promote sustainable washing practices in their online store.
Iriedaily practices circularity through its use of natural materials. Clothes made entirely from natural raw materials, such as cotton, hemp and viscose are biodegradable.
Iriedaily manufactures in Portugal and China, which increases its supply chain length. However, they are in close contact with their manufacturers, reducing the size of their supply chain through the absence of intermediaries.
Iriedaily is PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) certified and avoids animal products in their garments and accessories.
Iriedaily does not follow fast-changing trends but releases a new collection every six months. With their androgynous style, their collections feature streetwear, sportswear and street style, with touches of casual boho.
The Iriedaily website and report lists detailed information about the different manufacturers, as well as information about each item of clothing. Their product pages show where each garment is made, what materials it is made of and whether these are organic. They are working on identifying Tier 3 and 4 suppliers, meaning raw material sourcing.
