WORKING CONDITIONS AND WAGES
The brand produces locally, working with family businesses and fair trade partners.
FANT works closely with small businesses and favours long-term partnerships. The collaboration is clearly personal and based on partnership. The brand emphasises the value of trust and individual connection, including in the choice of materials and the implementation of the designs.
Many products are handmade, unique or available in limited editions.
FANT does not have its own production facilities, but cooperates with external workshops and companies, some of which are family-run.
The cooperation with ‘About A Jacket’ is an indication of social commitment and the endeavour to combine creative processes with social integration.
The collaboration with women with a refugee background is an inclusive step in terms of social participation and empowerment.
MATERIALS
- Belgian linen (stonewashed)
- European linen
- Deadstock cotton
- Organic cotton
- Mercerised cotton poplin
- Cotton
- Washed voile wool (mulesing-free)
- Recycled synthetic materials
- Vintage clothing and vintage objects
FANT emphasises the ‘wabi-sabi philosophy’ and consciously accepts irregularities and imperfections in the material.
FANT predominantly uses more sustainable materials such as Belgian and European linen, organic cotton, deadstock textiles and mulesing-free wool from Germany. Read more about the benefits of organic cotton here. This is complemented by recycled synthetic fibres, vintage materials, clay, wood and precious metals. The brand pays attention to local origin, works with artisanal techniques and works to avoid overproduction.
PACKAGING
FANT does not provide any information on the packaging materials used, both in terms of e‑commerce and throughout the supply chain.
WATER USE AND CHEMICALS
The label uses natural materials such as organic cotton, linen and deadstock fabrics, which potentially reduces the use of chemicals and water compared to conventional textiles. In addition, mulesing-free wool and hand-woven fabrics are used, which indicates a more resource-conserving, traditional processing. However, specific technical measures or ecological standards are not disclosed.
CIRCULAR PRODUCT DESIGN
In many cases, FANT uses mono-materials such as 100% organic cotton, 100% linen or 100% wool. At the same time, deadstock fabrics and vintage materials are also used, the composition of which can vary. These products are often more difficult to recycle.
There is no indication of a take-back system for used products or recycling programmes.
The products are generally easy to repair due to their craftsmanship, minimalist design (e.g. knotted or wrapped fasteners) and the use of more durable materials.
CIRCULAR BUSINESS MODEL
FANT does not offer an official repair service. Similarly, no take-back system for used or worn-out clothing is made available. However, the brand pursues circular approaches through upcycling, the use of deadstock and limited one-off pieces. Ease of repair results indirectly from the high-quality craftsmanship.
DISTANCE & SUPPLY CHAIN COMPLEXITY
- Netherlands
- Belgium (origin of the linen material)
- Germany (spinning and weaving of mulesing-free wool)
- India (hand-woven double ikat fabrics made from organic cotton, in cooperation with Capsicum)
- FANT HQ is located in Arnhem, Netherlands (Sonsbeeksingel 40, 6821 AA).
FANT has a manageable, relatively simple supply chain with a few carefully selected partners. Production takes place locally and partly in close cooperation with specialised companies.
TRANSPORTATION
- FANT does not provide any specific information on transport methods. However, as the majority of the materials come from Europe and fabric development in India only accounts for a small proportion, it can be concluded that the supply chain is mostly short with limited transport costs. There is no information on the type of transport.
- Shipping to the end customer is carried out by PostNL, DHL or UPS.
- Wool (mulesing-free)
- Origin: Spun and woven in Germany
FANT does not use any other animal materials.
The brand makes no official statement or behavioural guidelines on the use of animal materials, but explicitly states the mulesing-free origin of the wool.
PRODUCT DESIGN
FANT offers women’s fashion, including trousers, skirts, shirts, belts and scarves.
The cuts are oversized and loose. The style is intuitive and artistic, often inspired by ethnic craftsmanship and an anthropological approach to clothing.
SLOW FASHION PROCESSES
FANT does not have a classic collection cycle, but works on a project basis. The brand has a permanent core collection that is not seasonal and occasionally complements this with new, limited designs. Many pieces are created in small batches or as one-offs, which indicates an individual and demand-orientated production.
FANT deliberately avoids traditional end-of-season sales, as the label focuses on timeless designs that remain part of the collection for several seasons.
PRODUCT TRANSPARENCY
The materials used are typically clearly labelled on the FANT product pages. Cutting details such as fit, length or fastening solutions as well as special processing techniques (e.g. hand embroidery or special seams) are also described. The country of production is also stated.
There is no complete transparency across the entire supply chain – for example, regarding preliminary products, yarn origin or dyeing processes. Traceability is therefore partially available, but not comprehensive.
PROCESS TRANSPARENCY
FANT provides general insight into their working methods, materials and philosophy, mainly through their main page and supporting articles. The brand describes its approach as intuitive and characterised by craftsmanship, with a focus on small collections, local collaboration and a conscious choice of materials.
Individual production countries and co-operation partners such as Capsicum or About A Jacket are mentioned.
Product-related information – such as materials, origin or production location – can be seen in part on the respective product pages. However, there is no end-to-end traceability or standardised presentation across all items.
Conclusion
FANT from Arnhem impresses with handcrafted details, local production and social co-operation. Each item of clothing tells its own story. Discover the unique pieces below on the COSH! map.
