How sustainable is s.Oliver?

S.Oliver Group is a Ger­man fashion com­pa­ny. It holds a num­ber of brands of which S.Oliver is the big­gest. The group has some ini­tia­tives to reduce its car­bon foot­print, like off­set­ting some of its ship­ping impact and using bet­ter fini­shing tech­niques for its denim pro­duc­tion, but doesn’t track and publish its car­bon foot­print and doesn’t offer enough trans­pa­ren­cy into its sup­ply chain.

The com­pa­ny is main­ly focu­sing on impro­ving its mate­rial sour­cing. It wants to achieve 100% more sus­tai­nable cot­ton by 2030 and aims to increase that per­cen­tage through its part­ner­ships with the Bet­ter Cot­ton Ini­tia­tive and Cot­ton Made in Afri­ca. The last known per­cen­tage of more sus­tai­nable cot­ton was only 5%, and the tar­get for 2020 is set at 15%. The com­pa­ny is mohair-free since 2020, but still uses ani­mal-deri­ved mate­rials, like wool and lea­ther, from uncer­ti­fied sources.

S.Oliver Group has a Code of Conduct and is a mem­ber of the Fair Labor Asso­cia­tion, which conducts inde­pendent audits, but doesn’t report on the audit fre­quen­cy or results and doesn’t pro­vide enough trans­pa­ren­cy concer­ning labor rights.
