The Belgian brand makes your skin healthier by using rosehip oil, extracted in Chile by local women and entrepreneurs. Maiwe takes its name from Lake Maihue, a beautiful lake in southern Chile, where the rosehips are harvested. Founder Maayke Ruyffelaere turned her background in bioengineering and passion for wild plants into an honest skincare line.
Ethics
The rosehip oil is made in Chile through a social project where only women are employed. In this way, Maiwe wants to empower women and increase their access to the labor market. The rose hips are picked by hand and further processed in a company in the south of Chile. The company is also managed by women.
This allows women to be offered financial security and employment throughout the year, not just during the harvest season. Part of the profit is reinvested back into sustainable projects in Chile, to strengthen the community. In this way the money flows back to society, and a sustainable future can be guaranteed.
Ingredients
Maiwe’s ambition is to use only native rosehip from Chile for its gentle skin care. By using native plants, this will benefit biodiversity. Did you know that rose hips come from wild roses? These grow well in arid soils, requiring little water for production.
Rosehip oil has numerous benefits: it rejuvenates your skin, nourishes it and strengthens it. Thanks to the beta carotene, your skin gets antioxidants that fight aging and fade scars and acne. The linoleic acid in the rosehip oil has an anti-inflammatory effect and protects the skin from harmful substances or air pollution. In addition, the omega 9 makes the skin soft and elastic. Maiwe nourishes your skin thanks to its powerful natural ingredients and vitamins.
The Belgian cosmetics brand is also suitable for sensitive skintypes, as it does not add any fragrances or other chemical additives. All skin types can be treated with Maiwe, but women who suffer from aging skin, dry skin, eczema or occasional pimples will benefit most from this minimalist care brand.
Animal Welfare
The skincare brand is completely vegan, no animal products are involved, nor are they tested on animals. However, the brand has no certificates. Certificates are not a sacred thing at COSH! many smaller brands like Maiwe cannot afford expensive certificates, but can still meet all the criteria.
Circular Economy
Our products come in violet glass bottles or PCR (post-consumer recycled) plastic and are packaged in compostable and recyclable boxes. In the future, the brand plans to reduce waste even further, by implementing reusable pumps and creating a system to refill existing bottles.
Short Supply Chain
The rosehip oil is made entirely in Chile on a small scale, from the harvest to the finished product. Even though Chile is not close by, the carbon footprint can be kept minimal due to little transport taking place in the country.
