While the big retail com­pa­nies and fashion chains are doing eve­ry­thing they can to drive their cus­to­mers (even more) into a shop­ping fren­zy during Black Fri­day, at Blue­Ci­ty, we’re hit­ting the big RESET but­ton this wee­kend. Behind the clothes we wear eve­ry day and the items we buy, the­re’s a world of pol­lu­tion and waste, so we say: F*ck Black Fri­day! On Satur­day, Novem­ber 25 – the day after – we offer a posi­tive alter­na­tive and trans­form the old wave pool into a green depart­ment store with a clo­thing exchange by The Swap­shop, a mar­ket with sus­tai­nable and fair gifts, and a behind-the-scenes look at the second-hand tex­tile sor­ting com­pa­ny Erdo­tex. Research from the Amster­dam Uni­ver­si­ty of Applied Sciences reveals that the ave­rage Dutch per­son has around 173 clo­thing items in their war­drobe, of which about 50 items have remai­ned unu­sed for over a year. We believe that the Black Fri­day wee­kend is the per­fect time to dig through that full clo­set and, ins­tead of buying a lot of new clothes and gifts, search for a sus­tai­nable alter­na­tive. The Swap­shop Swap Clothes Ins­tead of Buying New
The clo­thing indus­try is one of the most pol­lu­ting indus­tries in the world, contri­bu­ting to over 10% of glo­bal CO2 emis­sions. At the same time, we dis­card about 17 kilo­grams of tex­tiles per per­son annual­ly. It’s time for a change. Blue­Ci­ty encou­rages Rot­ter­dam resi­dents to dive into their clo­sets and come for a clo­thing swap. Pack your men’s and women’s clo­thing in good condi­tion (items that could still make someone else hap­py) and bring them to Blue­Ci­ty on Satur­day, Novem­ber 25^th, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The bet­ter the qua­li­ty, the more Swaps (points) you’ll receive for the clo­thing item. The num­ber of swaps you get per item is 2, 5, 10, or 15 Swaps.
