The candles from the brand’s newest collection, the Nomad Collection, are made from rapeseed wax. This wax comes from Europe. Brandt kaarsen is currently sourcing oils from the Netherlands to make the rapeseed wax candles as local as possible. At COSH! we like this, because within Europe we can assume good working conditions at Brandt’s factories and suppliers.

The other candles are made from soy wax, which comes from North America. They chose this variant because the origin of the wax processed in Europe is unknown. They don’t want to take that risk at Brandt kaarsen!

Brandt kaarsen are made from 100% soy or rapeseed wax, natural oils for fragrances and a zinc and lead-free wick made from organic cotton. Soy and rapeseed wax burns 30 – 45% longer than kerosene candles. Rapeseed wax burns cleanly; the only soot released comes from the cotton wick. Moreover, rapeseed wax is a natural product and completely biodegradable.

Production of the candles takes place in Utrecht. The soy wax comes from North America. Because the brand prefers to work as locally as possible, the rapeseed wax for the newest collection comes from Europe. Therefore, the chain for the candles from this collection will be shorter than for the soy wax candles.

Brandt kaarsen is completely vegan! Candles often contain animal raw materials such as beeswax and stearin from animal fat. Brandt’s candles are made from 100% soy and rapeseed wax, making them completely vegan!

Brandt kaarsen is honest and transparent about where production takes place and where the soy and rapeseed waxes come from. The brand says it is working on being able to make the candles even more local, for example by obtaining the oils for certain candles from the Netherlands and by eventually switching to 100% rapeseed wax from Europe. They are honest about the fact that they do not yet know whether this will succeed, but that they will keep consumers informed.

Packaging

Brandt kaarsen tries to make sustainable choices when it comes to packaging. That’s why they use boxes made from agricultural waste and recycled kraft and soluble starch flakes to protect your candles during shipping. In addition, they reuse shipping materials. The candles themselves are in glass. The labels on each candle are made of recycled paper. In addition, the ink is eco-friendly and the stamp is made from recycled wood. The brand does not say anything about what the lid of the glass jar is made of.

To stay in the theme of recycling; the brand is a big fan of this! That’s why they give tips for what you can do with the glass when the candle runs out: You can refill the glass with tea lights from the Refill collection, put a plant in it or keep a homemade cream in it. Or use it as a cocktail glass, or pen holder. The options are endless!
